My method of teaching is known as expressive technique, a method created by Demetrius Dounis. I learned this method from world renowned string pedagogue George Neikrug, with whom I have been studying for 10 years. This interview with Neikrug by Tim Janof of the Internet Cello Society shows some of the guiding principles and details of Neikrug’s teaching.

Basic principles:

  • Learn to play instinctively by applying how the body works in everyday life to the cello.
  • Playing should feel physically easy.
  • Develop a musical personality through singing the music and immediately applying it to playing.
  • Develop technique through learning actual compositions.
